Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speaker. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency which is a website with videos and comments discussing the depictions of females in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, critic, as well as an award-winning feminist for nearly 10 years. Feminist Frequency is a website designed to provide education on the role of women in pop culture, is managed by Sarkeesian. Dispelling stereotypes of women is the main goals of her organization. But, she also is keen to draw attention to issues such as the discrimination and harassment of women online. Sarkeesian is a graduate in Political and Social Thinking from York University. As a public speaker, she is highly sought after and has given talks at TEDxWomen and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. At a young age Sarkeesian was interested in the issues surrounding gender identity and feminist thought. As a student, in 2009, she launched the Feminist Frequency Website. The ambitious lady planned to start a web-based series examining gender representation in video games. However, she found herself the victim of an online harassment campaign. This attack didn't stop her, but instead strengthened her resolve as feminist media critic. For the many achievements she's made for feminism, she is an award winner. Anita Sarkeesian is an award awarded media critic, and director of Feminist Frequency an educational nonprofit which studies the portrayals of women in pop-culture storylines.
